Mission

WRVU Friends & Family is a league of WRVU DJs, alumni, and listeners committed to supporting Vanderbilt student radio broadcasting at WRVU 91.1 FM. This independent organization is in no way affiliated with Vanderbilt University or Vanderbilt Student Communications (VSC). WRVU Friends & Family is committed to bringing WRVU 91.1 FM back On the Air.

WRVU Friends & Family promotes opportunities for educational experiences in on-air radio broadcasting for Vanderbilt University and the Vanderbilt University Community. It also provides professional, technical and financial support as well as media broadcasting career mentorship to the students of WRVU 91.1 FM.

The Board of WRVU Friends & Family expresses its disappointment with Vanderbilt Student Communications' recent announcement that it will attempt to sell the broadcast license and that it requested a change of the call letters for the station on 19 May 2011, granted by the Federal Communications Commission effective 1 June 2011. Members of the Board and the public relied upon the good offices of the VSC Board Members who expressed that no decision had been made as recently as April 2011.

Goals

  1. The Board of WRVU Friends & Family calls upon Chancellor Zeppos in his role as the agent of the Vanderbilt Board of Trust to exercise its fiduciary duty as the sole corporate member of Vanderbilt Student Communications to halt the sale of 91.1 FM Nashville.
  2. The Board hereby announces the launch of a campaign to raise $50,000 for the purpose of continuing our ongoing efforts to alert the public and the administrations of WPLN, VSC, and Vanderbilt University of our objections to the sale. Furthermore, this money will be used to prepare petitions of protest for the Federal Communications Commission at such time that a public comment period is opened to complete the sale.
  3. To sustain and enhance opportunities in on-air radio broadcasting for Vanderbilt University students and the Vanderbilt University community.
  4. To support quality radio programming for Vanderbilt University and its surrounding region.
  5. To appreciate and protect the legacy of radio broadcasting, engineering, and pioneering at Vanderbilt University.
  6. To preserve for the future WRVU's educational mission of providing a laboratory where students can interact with an audience through the medium of broadcast radio and manage the day-to-day operations of an FCC licensed radio station.
  7. To provide technical and professional support to the students of WRVU. To ensure the highest quality stewardship of the 91.1 FM frequency.
